Glasser’s Solving Circle has many applications and can be adapted for use with
students in schools. It is a valuable
tool in the toolbox of the Lead Manager.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This example explains a process that was used in a primary school in Queensland Australia with great success and with
long-lasting results.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Every person who joins a group changes the dynamics. A new year six student arrived at Arundel
State School during the year. She was a
vivacious, attractive girl from South Africa of Indian descent. The ‘in-group’
of year six girls immediately included her in their group.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> After a time, the relationship began to deteriorate
and turned quite nasty and it descended
into name-calling and general put-downs, ending up a catfight and the girls scratching
of each other. Parents became
involved.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The classroom teacher and I were both Glasser advocates and decided this
would be an excellent opportunity to use the Solving Circle. I knew the classroom teacher had tried a few
interventions and we were now willing to see if the Solving Circle could make a
difference.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">There was never an investigation into who did what, or who
started the fights and this fresh approach proved a game-changer for the girls.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The process is heavily dependent on trust and if this not
present there is little chance for this to work. Blaming, complaining, criticising could well
be used to try and control others. The individuals on the Solving Circle must
have a level of trust with others to share information. A school culture that focuses on lead
management driven by internal motivation and control is crucial for this
process to work.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Adapting the process to a large primary school setting was easily done.
I met with each of the girls involved and interviewed each one alone, outside the classroom and away
from my office.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

My older brother and I had a discussion about school journals that were a part of our reading program at school in New Zealand all those years ago. He reminded me about a story that had made a huge impact on him called The Weather Rope. Perhaps it was the fact that we grew up in a farming community where the weather was always a topic of discussion "We need rain." Or "Wish it would stop raining so we can get the hay in." Perhaps it was the possibility of being able to control things over which we had no control.

<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , "tahoma" , "helvetica" , "freesans" , sans-serif; font-size: 13.2px;">

<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , "tahoma" , "helvetica" , "freesans" , sans-serif; font-size: 13.2px;">The story told of a community that discovered a weather rope that hung from the sky. All one had to do was to go and pull on the rope to get a change in the weather. If the community wanted rain then the rope was pulled and hey presto there was rain. Then if the rain was sufficient for the grass to grow, the rope was pulled again and there was the sunshine to dry up all the puddles.

Some wanted it to stop raining so they could go to the beach. Others wanted the wind to dry the washing. The gardeners wanted the wind to stop so that the roses would not be blown away. The arguments began and people were pulling the rope so often and so hard to get what they wanted, that the suddenly the rope fell out of the sky. People could not longer get what they wanted.

A
Murray High School Perspective

Recently, I received an email from a teacher who hopes to convince the
administration and staff of her school to move in the direction of creating a
Glasser Quality School. She was asked
the question that is the title of this article and she wanted my help to answer
it. Perhaps she sent this to many of the
Glasser Quality Schools. I found this a
compelling question and I wanted to share my answer here because we have all
given a lot of thought to our goal of teaching the world choice theory and we
have often wondered why there aren't more Glasser Quality Schools. Below is my answer to her question:

What
a great question! Actually, it has only
been 20 years since Dr. Glasser put his ideas together into a form that could
help people create an entire school. He
came out with The Quality School and Quality School Teacher in the
mid-90's. Also, this is not a program
that can be started in a school at the beginning of a year and then changed a
couple of years later. This is an idea
that starts up inside of each participant, from the administration to the
teachers, the students, and finally going home to the parents, and home to the
teachers' families and the principal's family, too.

Choice
Theory is not a program. Glasser Quality
Schools are not a program. They are a
thought system, a way of life, a new way of thinking about the world, about the
relationships between students and teachers, administrators, and families. It has taken us 26 years to create our
current level of mastery of Dr. Glasser's ideas here at Murray. We still have a long way to go and are
involved in making many changes, many improvements. Dr. Glasser always said that 95% of any problem
was a system problem and only 5%, if that much, was a people problem. So, the job of creating a Glasser Quality
School is to come up with a system that works to create happiness in the
school. This is not as easy as it
sounds, nor is it as difficult.

For
instance, each of us is learning Choice Theory.
Each of us has our own level of understanding of these ideas and each of
us is wrestling with our own level of resistance to these ideas. We are not all in the same place at the same
time, so the system you develop has to have a tolerance and a love for the
growth, the individual transformation, that is required. The system has to have a tolerance for the
time it takes for each individual to transform him/herself.

I
can attest to the idyllic environment that is created when you work hard for 26
years to develop a school based on Dr. Glasser's Choice Theory. We are not all perfect here. Most of our students have been very hurt by
life in so many ways, hurt by the education system that has left too many of
them feeling like failures. We have
conflicts every day, but we have a system to understand the conflicts and to
work them out. For instance, when two
students became angry at one another on Friday, both of them requested to be
able to separate from the other, so no physical conflict would arise. They walked away. This is the result of years of work with
these two boys to learn Choice Theory, that they can get in charge of the
choices they make when anger hits them.
They did not get "in trouble" because they raised their voices
at each other and disrupted class. They got
time and attention from trained and loving teachers who heralded their
decisions not to hit each other and helped them think through what had happened
that led to the conflict, what they each could have done differently, and on
Monday, will help them mediate with each other until a plan they can both agree
with is in place and a solution to their conflict has begun.

There
is so much to say about the success of this school. Our test scores soar because our students are
happy here and want to do well to help the school, and themselves. But the best of all is the feeling of
camaraderie, of friendship between students and teachers. Here, there is trust between us. We work hard at it. We constantly work to improve our
relationships because we know kids won't learn well from people they don't love
and who don't love them. We use the word
love all the time here. We aren't afraid
to say we love our kids and they aren't embarrassed to say they love us,
too. We think schools should be built on
a foundation of love and trust.

So,
why aren't there thousands of these schools -- good question. We work all the time to help schools consider
adopting these ideas. Our students
travel to schools around the world, teaching people how to start up a Glasser
Quality School. No one is as great a
spokesman about Glasser Quality Schools than the kids who are educated
here. Just last week, we hosted a team
from a county in North Carolina who had heard about Murray and wanted to see it
in action. Afterwards, they were so
overwhelmed by the level of love the kids shared about Murray and the level of
understanding they had about why they are being educated the way they are. They said they want that for their
school. They asked our kids for advice
about how to implement these ideas with middle school kids and got lots of
suggestions. They are planning to bring
a team of Murray kids to North Carolina to talk to their faculty.

I
think that it takes a long time and a lot of commitment to help an entire staff
come to believe that it's possible to
create a school based entirely on love and respect. Next, they need to be willing to transform
themselves by learning Choice Theory, Reality Therapy, and Lead Management, in
order to bring this about. For instance,
teachers may have become set in their ways and it might be tough for them to
give up their "teacher look," the one that nails a kid who is
disrupting. But that look is a
threat. That look has no place in a
Glasser Quality School. So to even give
up the looks we've come to rely on,
that's asking a lot. And it takes YEARS
of practice, but like anything worth doing, years of practice pay off
hugely! We think our kids deserve an
education from a team of professionals who have been practicing for years to
treat them respectfully, and to expect great things from them, so they feel
inspired to excel. But I think you can
see that the individual transformations that will need to take place for this
to happen take time, a personal inclination, and especially, belief.

When
we first started Murray, we all believed we could change schools so kids and
teachers would like them more. At first,
however, we brought all our old controlling and punitive behaviors with us and
we used them every one of them. This was
good because we got to see that they don't really work, if working means
helping resistant students come to love us and to therefore love school and
education. And because we began the
school open to changing education in a serious way, we kept tinkering. We kept developing methods of helping
ourselves as staff grow and slough off our old punitive ways and to keep from
having a school of chaos with kids running around causing untold trouble. We learned that kids who love their school
don't want to cause trouble and are willing to keep working to unlearn their
old habits of acting out and hurting others without thinking. They are mostly grateful to be learning the
skills they can clearly see will help them in their lives, both in and out of
school.

So,
if you want to talk more about Glasser Quality Schools, feel free to call me. I
LOVE talking about Glasser Quality Schools because I believe that these ideas
are so superb that one day all schools will be using them. Educators would be fools not to use these
ideas when they work so well at helping people love school and learning.

According to the New Zealand Department of Corrections website, one in every two prisoners is re-convicted and re-imprisoned within four years of release. With a 50% failure rate, is what we are doing working? Anne Tolley, Minister of Corrections wants to reduce this rate by 25%.

How about 3.5% That is the result of a 2012 longitudinal university study in the Californian Institution for Women. These inmates are being taught how they can have control over their lives by Instructors from the William Glasser Institute. Over a period of five years 500 women have spent over 100 hours learning Choice Theory. There is currently a waiting list of 200 women wanting to be involved. They request transfers from other prisons to be able to learn this life -changing program.

Of the 175 women paroled, only five have returned to prison. That is 3.5% - a long way better than 25%.

This training is available in New Zealand. Perhaps we need to look at what it can do for our women in prison. They are the mothers of children now and in the future. They can make a difference.

And at the same time we could be teaching students at school Choice Theory to enable them to make choices so they don’t end up in prison in the first place. Everyone is one choice away from prison; let’s teach these young people that they have the choice.

Strengthen New Zealand through teaching Choice Theory Psychology. Choosing, Connecting Changing.

This scenario is no doubt played over and over throughout the schools in many countries around the world. New female student arrives at a school, leaving behind friends at a previous school. At first the student is popular, perhaps because of a novelty factor. Then the girl is seen as a competitor with the popular boys of the school. The perpetrators join forces to threaten and punish the victim.

Without intervention this can be an ongoing barrage - deliberate, calculated, purposeful.

Phoebe Prince hung herself, after this ongoing verbal assault over many months became intolerable.

A similar scenario occurred at the school when I was deputy principal. The new eleven year old girl arrived – very attractive and bubbly – and at first was welcomed into the group of popular girls. The friendship and the subsequent behaviour of all of the girls deteriorated, to what could only be called a ‘cat fight’, with physical abuse escalating.

The teacher was unable to resolve the issue and parents became involved.

I used an intervention called the Solving Circle from Dr Glasser’s book Choice Theory, a new psychology for personal freedom.

The long term results of that intervention are documented – years later - relayed to me by the mother of one of the girls. The girls involved in the whole situation at school were still friends. The Solving Circle had lasting impact.

In the TV program there was blaming, criticism and calls for punishment of the bullies and of the education staff. Legislation was introduced involving the mandatory reporting of bullying. Nowhere in the article was there any thought given to the ‘system’ and how a school can be such that students learn to resolve differences.

The obvious cliques in the story, the adversarial relationships are likely indicators that competitive forces are at work. Power-over seemed to be the predominant way of interacting.

Until schools change their ‘system’ to one where issues like this are ‘worked out’, bullying will continue and unhappy students may take the ultimate choice, that of taking their own lives.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7670789868702044235.post-37991765885618676672012-11-23T20:34:00.000-08:002012-11-23T20:41:34.941-08:00Strengthening New Zealand So People Don't Want to Leave

I watched a current affairs program about the New Zealanders
going to live in Australia in their thousands over the last five years. The
current situation is that New Zealanders arriving in Australia are temporary
citizens, not able to access any government money in the form of grants or
benefits. That people cannot access unemployment benefits is a good thing, as it is often too easy to become dependent instead of standing on your own two feet. However, the argument was the children who
have gone with their parents to live in Australia since 2003 are unable to
access student loans when they wish to study and will need to pay overseas
student fees which are significantly higher.

Minister Peter Garrett responded to questions about this
situation, stating that New Zealanders were making the choice, knowing
this information before they left New Zealand.
He did indicate that there were avenues, government to government that
could be undertaken to change this situation. He handled a difficult interview
by maintaining his stance that it was an informed choice.

The
tweets running underneath the story were interesting. They used all the disconnecting habits. Understandably, few supported what Peter Garrett was saying.

#New
Zealand should do the same thing to any Australians who come here. Take
away their rights. Threatening and
punishing are deeply entrenched in our society.

#It’s not fair. We
don’t do it so why should they? Blaming and ‘shoulding’ behaviours,

One
tweet suggested that we strengthen New Zealand so that people did not want
to leave the country. What a great idea.
Make New Zealand a needs- satisfying place to be and they will want to
stay.

If New Zealand was a place that people
wanted to be, what would that be like? A
place where people felt safe; where they had a sense of freedom; where they
could be playful and stay connected. Perhaps most people equate a move to Australia
with financial success. How can we change the perception of financial success
to one of being satisfied with what we already have? Difficult in a materialistic, celebrity-driven
society.

The William Glasser Institute-New
Zealand has as its vision statement, Strengthening
New Zealand through Choice Theory Psychology. Dr Glasser once told me he believed
that New Zealand was a small enough country to have the majority of people knowing, understanding and using Choice Theory. If they
did know, and lived a life where they did not meet their needs at the expense
of others, then New Zealand would be a better place to be.

Raewyn Thorne, Regional Coordinator of the William Glasser Institute-New Zealand has sent in this report of a recent meeting held in New Zealand.

Last Thursday a small group of people who had completed a Basic Intensive Week at different times in the last 15 years, met in Tokoroa, part of the Central region with Bette Blance.

After coffee and nibbles and a catch up chat, Tina-Maree Hooper shared a little of her experiences at the Glasser Conference in Los Angeles in June and some of the ideas she had brought back with her.

The Choice Theory chart came to life again as Bette walked around it and linked it to our discussions and behaviours. We also reviewed the axioms of Choice Theory.

Feedback has included "I just learn a little more every time" and "It's great to have the chance to ask questions in a small group".

We arranged to meet again in November when another 6 or 7 will have completed their Basic Intensive Training.
This story comes from Raewyn Whiteman Thorne who is the Regional Coordinator for the William Glasser Institute - New Zealand. She is at Tokoroa North Primary School.

Her story was about one particular student who came off the field more than a bit stroppy at interval complaining about another student. He said he was being mean, he wouldn't let him play and was saying mean stuff.

The boy stood beside Raewyn huffing and puffing with a bit of swearing. Raewyn said to him, "So what do you want? Do you want to play or to stand here with me, you can only sort out your stuff not the other boy."

He stood there sulking for a few minutes and within five minutes was back on the field, hesitantly at first, then he got over it and did really well.

"We reflected later" said Raewyn "and he could tell me exactly how it was and what he had to sort out."

Choice Theory made it so simple.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7670789868702044235.post-80663051478639555472012-08-05T22:31:00.005-07:002012-08-05T22:32:23.057-07:00On Becoming a Glasser Quality School

Those of us committed to Choice Theory in the field of education would most likely agree that if all schools were Glasser Quality Schools, we would have little need for places like the Californian Institution for Women in Los Angeles.

And perhaps people like Paul Van Houts, mental health nurse in Townsville in Australia would have fewer clients.

And perhaps fewer patients would be in our hospitals. Ah! What a dream

Implementing Choice Theory and its applications in schools takes an enormous amount of time, energy and commitment on the part of everyone in the school.

Throughout the world there are schools ‘on the journey’. Some have declared as a GQS while others are working towards it. Even though a school has declared as a GQS it is still always on the journey of continuous improvement.

In Australia and New Zealand we have decided to draw up a database of schools ‘on the journey’ to acknowledge and honour their efforts and give their contact details to people wanting to visit.

It is a very brave step to declare as a GQS. You are announcing to the world and to the Glasser Community in particular that you have self evaluated and all agreed on achieving this status.

There are huge expectations that the conditions of quality will be found in every nook and cranny of the school. Everyone from the janitor to the principal, the youngest child to the most experienced teacher know and live in a Choice Theory way.

Factors such as changing government expectations, funding constraints, parental expectations can all work against the implementation of a Choice Theory school. Commitment and a willingness to persist in the face of this adversity is what makes a Glasser Quality School.

In the words of Michael Jordan

Obstacles don't have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don't turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it. Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7670789868702044235.post-63451578547032489202012-07-29T04:24:00.001-07:002012-07-29T04:29:03.286-07:00The Changing of the GuardDuring the London Olympic Games opening ceremony young athletes aged between 16 and 19 took turns with the Olympic Torch as they ran around the Olympic stadium.

These young athletes, nominated by various famous British athletes from the past, symbolised the passing of the mantle from the past to the future.

This was reminiscent of the dinner on the final night at the recent William Glasser Association International conference in Los Angeles.
She told me that sometimes her friend was mean to her. In wanting to change her thinking about this behaviour I asked her "Do you think that she was just trying to get what she wanted?" She nodded her head knowingly.

In helping children to reframe the behaviour of others into Choice Theory language we can help them to see that all behaviour has a purpose. Exploring behaviour in this way opens up the discussion for self evaluation. Try it some time. It is fun to see the understanding develop in children so young.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7670789868702044235.post-62471946606786938392012-04-09T11:08:00.005-07:002012-04-09T11:14:54.852-07:00Oh where , oh where is Choice Theory when you need it.A Sunday newspaper appeared on the table the other day. One that I don't usually see. Three articles attracted my attention. One the front page the title was "The secret story of violence in schools' with a photo of a face with a large bruise under the eye. The article began with descriptions of student behaviours towards teachers in New Zealand schools. Pushing, verbal abuse, kicking, teacher cars being vandalised. Possibly not very different from many schools in other countries. The article stated that in some cases schools were asking teachers not to report these incidents for fear of involving the police would lead to negative publicity.

The second article "Wagging school the daily deal for 29,000" with a subtitle -Chronic truants are getting lost in the system and ending up in crime or teen pregnancy statistics.
One student was reported as saying he had regularly skipped school since the age of 13. "School was boring and dumb and I didn't know what to do. I just wanted to get stoned and hang out with my mates"

Since that time this student had joined an alternative edcuation program where he was attending class because the lessons were interesting.

It is not news to us that the longer students spend outside the classroom the more likely they are to end up illiterate, on welfare and living a life of crime. They seek pleasure - using drugs and alcohol rather than pursuing a life where they have a chance at happiness through positive, generative relationships.

The third article was more uplifting. It outlined an equine assisted learning experience. Through an organisation called New Zealand Horse-Assisted Learning Organisation ( NZHalo) 'at risk' students, special needs children including autistic children, troubled youth are able to benefit by attending these learning experiences.

All of these articles have a unifying theme. Belonging and connectedness. In the first article about violence, students who feel connected are happier and therefore less likely to use violence to get what they want. If students are not connected at school they go where they feel connected. When students truant they do not find school needs satisfying and they go where their needs are met.

The NZHalo learning experience was more than connecting with the horses. One group learned to ask for help from their classmates with managing a horse, something that they did not previously do. Another lesson was about setting boundaries.

Making learning relevant, engaging and needs satisfying is what Choice Theory teaches.
The elimination of coercion makes for a quality learning environment where all can succeed and become productive. Fix the system rather than the individuals. Truancy officers do an important job but why would students want to go back to the same old situation when it is not needs satisfying.

Read the blog written by an Australian teacher about how she connected with her students.
Just imagine if the teachers from a whole school did this. Or a whole nation of teachers did this. How different things would be.

This is one such elevator speech.

<div style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier, monospace;">What have you lot been up to each Saturday?"

It sets out the problem

It sets out the opportunity

It sets out how the training is going to solve that in a way that's valuable to customers

It inspires the listener

How does this sound?

We have a world that is beset with violence, break down of families, mentally ill people, jails full to overflowing

Learning Choice Theory has an answer to these huge issues. Even if we were able to eliminate just one of these areas, society would be a better place for everyone.

We teach people that we need to recognise that we can only control ourselves. The issues are really all about trying to control others. Violence is trying to control others; break downs in families are the result of one person in the marriage trying to control another. Mentally ill people are largely people who have become disconnected from those who are important to them and people are often incarcerated because they tried to use force to control another person. Choice Theory teaches us ways to get what we want in a way that does not stop others from getting what they want.

Wouldn't it be a wonderful place if we were able to eliminate these major concerns in society. Then the only thing we would need to solve is the poverty of many because of the greed of a few.

Try this for yourself in your area of using Choice Theory and its applications.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7670789868702044235.post-47160767559749193312011-06-06T01:18:00.000-07:002011-06-06T01:18:02.679-07:00Koraunui ClassroomIn this classroom the teacher Norah Jennings is working with a small group of learners in Year 6 discussing the Basic Needs.
